Among the evidence that he is alive, a source familiar with the details cited attempts by high-ranking Iranian officials to organize face-to-face meetings with him, which failed for security reasons. At the same time, an American official noted that Washington is still trying to understand who is actually making decisions in Tehran: “We have no proof that he is actually giving the orders. It is no less than bizarre. We don’t believe the Iranians would have bothered to choose a dead man as Supreme Leader, but at the same time we have no proof that he is actually the de facto leader.”
