“universities are not meant to be profit centers, and shouldn’t be run that way. They are rather shared infrastructures dedicated to a form of mutual aid, in which those who have – in this case, knowledge – support those who need, with the goal of producing a more just and equitable society.” — Kathleen Fitzpatrick, from a talk at #mla2023 #mla23

MLA 2023

I’m a little late in getting this posted, but I delivered the paper below at MLA 2023 as part of a session entitled “How the Liberal Arts Works,” organized by Julia Mickenberg. It draws on the work I’ve been doing toward (what I sincerely hope will be) the final revision of Leading Generously. To that end, feedback is most welcome!

The racial and social justice work that scholars on the “Racial Justice Work in the Humanities” panel are doing is inspirational and life-changing. ✊🏽#MLA23 #MLA2023
My #MLA2023 hotel in #SanFrancisco—built 1909—has the old-fashioned, brass & glass tubes mail chutes connecting the floors, this amazing brass mailbox on the ground floor, and paper #stationery in the desk drawers. I feel as tho’ I should have written someone a letter!
Come to our awesome roundtable this morning: “Racial Justice Work in the Humanities: Public-Facing Scholars’ Projects, Lessons, Limitations, and Hope.” I’ll be speaking on my work fighting anti-Asian racism.✊🏼#MLA2023 #MLA23

Moving to Libraryland: Working Conditions for Literary Scholars in Academic Libraries

Librarians and literary scholars have shared interests in knowledge creation, dissemination, and preservation. For academics interested in pursuing employment opportunities in this field, understanding the values, structures, and intellectual concerns of libraries and librarianship is key to making the transition. Panelists discuss their diverse career trajectories, as well as their experience serving on search committees and working in libraries.

@MarilynPF I've had a similar experience. I switched to the hcommons server/ instance because a couple of people I admire are on it and its admins are communicative and most folks on hcommons have an interest in the humanities and lean toward intellectual. I switched to the Tusky app for Android smartphones, which lets me toggle between accounts I follow (regardless of which server they're on), accounts just on hcommons (where I'm able to get highlights from the #mla2023 conference), and random accounts in the world (where I can discover new good accounts to follow).
I'm really moved by the enthusiasm of grad scholars at #MLA2023 and #AHA2023 for the 1st time. It's that energy that we should all be working as hard as possible to support. Everyone should have such a place at the table in the contemporary academy because we need everyone.
