"The loss of Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement would be catastrophic for both the hospital’s financial viability and the healthcare infrastructure of western North Carolina. Mission Hospital is the largest medical facility and the only Level 1 trauma center serving residents of western North Carolina, where residents are older, poorer, and sicker than average elsewhere in the state.

Decertification would mean Mission could not bill Medicare or Medicaid for services, depriving it of its largest revenue source, potentially leading to a reduction in services or, less likely, closure."

Way to go, #MissionHospital !

For anyone following the mess at #MissionHospital in #Asheville, apparently CMS is finally getting serious about the recurrent deadly ineptitude and isn't falling for "we'll staff up for a month until this goes away" BS.

Citing “systemic and recurring patterns” of harm at Mission, CMS rejects hospital’s latest plan of correction, sets new deadline

Citing “systemic and recurring patterns of noncompliance found during previous surveys,” the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services harshly informed Mission Hospital CEO Greg Lowe last week that its latest Immediate Jeopardy citation — the third in less than two years — would require “enhanced” remedies for continued participation in the CMS program. Mission […]

Mission Hospital placed in immediate jeopardy; sanction is third since sale to HCA

This is a developing story and will be updated. Mission CEO Greg Lowe announced the sanction in a […]

More fuckery from #HCA and #MIssionHospital here in #Asheville after the death of yet another patient, and the continued under-staffing of our hospital system. This is what for-profit hospitals will all be doing in our current era soon.

HCA keeps saying how AVL is their best system, as they're making the most money here. But, as reported, HCA "never committed to quality care."

I still want that on a billboard.

‘A violent reaction of nausea and fury’

At the end of 2023, Mission had 7 neurologists on staff. At the end of 2024 it will have 2.

This area is full of seniors, many of whom moved here because of Mission's (pre-HCA) excellence. What do they do now?

More than half of Mission’s remaining staff neurologists say they are resigning, citing burnout, ‘nausea and fury’

Three staff neurologists are leaving Mission Hospital by the end of September, potentially leaving only two to provide critical care to hundreds of patients at the Asheville flagship hospital and across western North Carolina, including many who have suffered strokes. The departing physicians are neurohospitalists, specialists who treat patients in the hospital who are suffering […]

A broad coalition of members is beginning the push to force #HCA out of #Asheville's #MissionHospital.

Not sure how realistic it is, and the for-profit would doubtless load the system up with debt and basically scuttle it before they turned it over to someone else to run, but they are doing such an abysmal job that I'm really glad to see this.

‘They must leave’: Coalition begins push for HCA to relinquish Mission

A broad coalition of western North Carolina doctors, patient advocates, clergy members, a state senator and others are calling on HCA Healthcare to give up the Mission Health network, decrying the level of care it has provided since its $1.5 billion purchase in 2019. The five years since the acquisition of the then-nonprofit hospital system […]

Mission nurses call for management to address workplace violence

Choked. Hit. Kicked. Thrown against walls.  Nurses at HCA Healthcare-owned Mission Hospital face a steady stream of assaults and violence in their workplace and say management needs to do more to prevent their physical injuries and emotional trauma.  The violence is so prevalent that nurses called Asheville police 25 times in 2023 and complained that […]

HCA’s purchase of Mission presented as cautionary tale in draft report

Mission Health board members were blindsided by HCA Healthcare’s decision to aggressively cut patient care staff in order to save money following its purchase of the hospital system in 2019, according to a working draft of a study out of Wake Forest University from a leading scholar on health care law, public policy, and bioethics.
