Good news : Duggan really was serious about not wanting to be a spoiler. He saw that he would never win but he might have made a GOP win possible.

Former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says he is suspending his campaign for Michigan governor, citing an increasingly “toxic” political climate due to President Donald Trump’s war with Iran and skyrocketing gas prices. Duggan, a longtime Democrat, was running as an independent to replace Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who can’t run again due to term limits. He told The Associated Press Thursday that it was going to be “very hard to win” as Democrats who would have supported him are galvanizing against what’s going on in Washington. Duggan said it became clear that the odds were stacking against him. An independent has never served as Michigan governor.
If you are in Michigan, make a plan for THIS WEEKEND to sign the petition to get Money Out of Politics.
The petition will:
- Ban regulated utilities (like DTE and Consumers Energy) from contributing to state politicians
- Ban corporations with large state/local government contracts from contributing to state/local candidates in the jurisdiction of the contract
- Improve campaign finance disclosure
For details and to find where to sign!

Mike Rogers, running in a historically terrible year for GOP candidates, seeking a seat he's already lost once (Slotkin beat him in '24), decided that fealty to Trump is more important than Michigan's most consequential economic development project in decades. He may believe he can't win without the support of Trump's mob. But betting on Trump, against your own constituents, seems like a bad move to me.
Trump has lost the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce. They aren't telling him to go piss up a rope, but they're very pointedly not getting in line behind him, either
Right now the only people backing Trump's latest nonsense are the candidates and electeds who need his mob to gain or keep power.
John James is so afraid of Trump torpedoeing his chance to be Michigan's next governor that he torpoedoed his own chances by backing Trump's insane threats against the Gordie Howe Bridge. Outstanding work, everybody.
