Il mese scorso il ministro degli Esteri Abbas Araghchi aveva affermato che Teheran aveva deliberatamente limitato la gittata dei propri missili a duemila chilometri. Ma quanto avvenuto oggi lo smentisce: Teheran – scrive l’agenzia iraniana Mehr – conferma di aver lanciato due missili balistici contro la base congiunta anglo-americana sull’isola di Diego Garcia, nell’Oceano Indiano. La distanza dall’Iran: 3.810 chilometri. “Questo lancio rappresenta un passo significativo nel confronto con gli Stati Uniti“, sottolinea l’agenzia, e il fatto che l’Iran abbia preso di mira l’isola suggerisce che i suoi missili abbiano una gittata molto maggiore rispetto a quanto stimato.
Ma perché l’isola Diego Garcia è così importante? Situata nelle Chagos, arcipelago nell’Oceano Indiano che è stato ceduto alle isole Mauritius, è la sede della strategica base aerea del Regno Unito condivisa da decenni con gli Usa. Il 2 marzo Starmer aveva autorizzato gli Stati Uniti a utilizzare le basi della Raf a Fairford, in Inghilterra, e proprio la Diego Garcia, per attaccare l’Iran. L’isola è al centro di polemiche tra Londra e Washington per l’accordo di restituzione. La marcia indietro del primo ministro laburista sull’uso delle strutture militari del Regno, dopo un iniziale diniego, era stata duramente criticata dalle opposizioni.

But why is Diego Garcia Island so important? Located in the Chagos, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean that was ceded to the islands of Mauritius, it is the location of the UK’s strategic air base, jointly used for decades with the US. On March 2nd, Starmer authorized the United States to use the Raf bases at Fairford, in England, and specifically Diego Garcia, to attack Iran. The island is at the center of controversy between London and Washington over the return agreement. The first Labour Prime Minister’s backtrack on using the military facilities of the UK, after an initial denial, was harshly criticized by the opposition.
