We built a machine that writes on eggs. 🥚✍️
The Automatic Ovoid Scrivener — a Device from the Oval Realm. It uses a custom UI to take your designs and transfer them onto eggs with robotic precision.
Kit not available for this one yet — still ironing out a few things. In the meantime our Word Clock kits are in the shop for those who want to build something brilliant.

@sarahijackson @User47 What is life if you don't make anything?

And why did it take me so long to think about this?

Happy as a pig in muck as they say... in the #doghouse early this morning. Tunes on (some 90's DnB cos I'm that old!) and wiring up a LinuxCNC control setup with a raspberry pi 5. For an upcoming @rpimag article. #CNC #making
#crafting and #making is also involved. Very exciting.

Matthew Crawford - The Case for Working With Your Hands

Subtitled "Why office work is bad for us and fixing things feels good". It was originally published in 2009 under the title "Shop Class as Soulcraft". The retitling was for the UK market, because of people here not having the umbrella term "shop class" for things like woodwork, metalwork and fixing cars.

This was a re-read after some years, and I must say it still feels relevant! What it's saying about the satisfaction of making and fixing, and the dissatisfaction of - to use David Graeber's term -
"bullshit jobs", is if anything even _more_ true now. And it explains well the discipline of having to deal with actual reality.

As a natural result of his own work, a lot of his firsthand stories are about men and motorbikes or cars. I did think there was a strand of subtle sexism at times: not actively _dismissive_ of women, just leaning a bit on, how shall I put it? "the mystique of the brotherhood of engineers" kind of vibe. I still would probably read it again though.

The "Are You Sure?" Problem: Why Your AI Keeps Changing Its Mind

Ask your AI 'are you sure?' and watch it flip. Models fold 60% of the time because we trained them to please, not push back. The fix isn't better prompts.
