A little over a week ago, Linda Reynolds gave her first interview since winning her defamation case against Brittany Higgins. She gave it to Janet Albrechtsen, the right-wing columnist whose texts and phone calls infected the Sofronoff inquiry and to whom Reynolds had earlier leaked confidential details of Higgins’s Commonwealth settlement.

Reynolds looks forever like someone about to send her main back to the kitchen. She has been victimised by life. Everything is an injustice and all of it done to her. According to court documents, her middle name is Karen.

“We got the truth out, the lies, how it was deliberate, designed to take us down and to injure us and they did it very successfully,” Reynolds told Albrechtsen of her case against the young woman raped in her office. “That’s all on the public record. We stopped Higgins from defaming me again. And we brought the Higgins industry based on those lies to an end. But the fight for justice continues now.”

It is not clear exactly what Reynolds means by the “Higgins industry”. Perhaps she means the young family she is seeking to bankrupt. Reynolds has a separate claim running in the Federal Court, where she is suing the Commonwealth for failing to act in her best interests. Part of the case will depend on examining Higgins’s psychiatric records. She is also petitioning for a parliamentary inquiry into her treatment.

She sees this case in the first person. She is a woman of “me” and “I”. She says, “making it right means putting me in a position, financially, they can’t restore the last five years, but in a place where I would have been had all of this not happened”.

Reynolds describes the Commonwealth settlement paid to Higgins after her rape as a perfect stitch-up. She says she would never have agreed to it. “While I have no expectation that the Labor government will ever apologise for the damage that they have caused, they should at least make it right. So we can put a close to this, and say, ‘Well, that sucked, but it’s now finished and we can move on and rebuild our lives.’ ”

Again, it is not clear what Reynolds means by “move on”. Another “secret cache” of documents was shared with The Australian last week. Reynolds was quoted in a snatch of stories, all critical of Higgins and the government. She detailed a recent episode in which she beseeched the new attorney-general to intercede on behalf of her former chief of staff. The attorney-general’s spokesperson said: “Any insinuation that the Attorney-General validated the comments made by Ms Reynolds, or intimated that she would intervene, is false.”

When Reynolds launched her defamation action against Higgins, she did not contest that her former staffer had been raped in her office by a colleague. A civil court earlier accepted this on the balance of probabilities. In the defamation suit, the court heard Reynolds leaked confidential documents to Albrechtsen because she was “incredibly angry”. She claimed she chose Albrechtsen because the commentator was balanced, which the judge described as “inherently subjective”.

Reynolds has been forced to remove Penny Wong and Katy Gallagher from her federal court claim. They are being prosecuted by The Australian instead. There are calls for Labor to apologise. Anthony Albanese is warned in a headline about parliamentary privilege. Albrechtsen, who has been yoked to one side of this saga from the beginning, writes, “Trying to hide behind a rape is the lowest of blows by this Prime Minister.”

Like so much of what is worst in Australia, this story ends up in the moral plughole of the Murdoch press. The woman whose rape is at the centre of it is now treated as a villain. Her settlement is called “bizarre”. The man who raped her is given space to reflect on her “fame” and to call her husband a “puppet master”. An accompanying cartoon shows her husband conducting a choir of supporters.

At every turn, Reynolds has said she had no choice but to litigate. She is, of course, the victim. It could end tomorrow, she says, but only if she gets what she wants. “If the Labor government, in particular the Attorney-General, says to her department: ‘Enough, we got it wrong. We are sorry, we will make it right.’ ”

Again, it’s not clear what she means by “wrong” or “right”.

If someone says that you didn't support them after they were attacked, suing them pretty much looks like you not supporting them after they were attacked.

@InsurgoFormica #LyingCow won't give up. She will kill herself in the effort to get revenge on Brittany Higgins. Reynolds is just a BRS, and Lehrmann and, to some extent, Porter. Chasing their tails, and catching them...painfully.

And now it's linda (lying cow) Reynolds, who called the cleaners before she called the cops, claiming *she's* the victim.

Someone needs to have a little look in a dictionary.

#AHeadwithTwoEyes @twoeyehead I remember how Linda Reynolds hid from questions during her #lyingcow accusations saying she had a serious heart complaint. Just as liars do, using health issues as cover. #auspol #alttext
