Hole “Pretty On the Inside” (1991)

I loved reading Courtney Love interviews in the 90s. I learned a ton about rock & roll from this woman. I used to have a “Sassy” magazine subscription and I vividly remember the issue when Kurt & Courtney were on the cover.

This is the band’s first LP. I always simply thought of it as an early grunge record but now I’m listening to it and I can hear the No Wave influence. It’s dark, discordant and primal. Hole wouldn’t have existed without #SonicYouth and #LydiaLunch. In fact, Kim Gordon produced this album. For some reason side two is epically better than side one (imo).

It’s creepy how they all look like ghosts on the cover, especially because there was so much death surrounding these bands at the time.
