There's usually one rainbow-coloured piece displayed in the Lux Helsinki festival, which I think is a nice little Easter egg there. Kotryna Čalkaitė's Quietly Speaking Colors was the one of the year 2023.

Here's a photo by Petri Anttila, depicting the Lantern Park project of Lux Helsinki 2021, mentioned a few posts back. I was the third curator of the project, and since the lanterns prepared previously stayed in the roster, there were quite a many already when I started – in the end there were closer to 500, I think. During the five editions I was responsible, my foremost advice for the people preparing the lanterns was: go bonkers. And they sure did.

Artists studios are magical places, and I had a chance to visit Alexander Reichstein's. And his two storages! Reichstein is known in the light art circles of his installations with uv-lighted characters, made of wire - like drawings in 3D, but his materials are plenty more than just that. His works have been showed in many festivals and exhibitions, and I totally get why.

The last photo is by Tim Bird, from 2016 Lux Helsinki festival. There you can see one of Reichsteins artworks, They Were Here – and my MA Thesis work for the University of Arts curating programme Praxis, Images of Joy, projected on the cathedral façade in the back.

Sébastien Lefèvre's Soleil nuit Albireo is one of the artworks that will stay here as permanent public artworks after Lux Helsinki, which is great!

Installing a permanent artwork is way more complicated than installing a festival one, and that's why it takes time. Soleil is the third artpiece to stay here, but even the first one isn't installed yet. Let's hope the schedule of having all of them installed this spring will hold!

Seth and Irene From Kaleider had their so far largest installation of Twist and Shine in Lux Helsinki. And oh boy, does the large volume work great with this piece! It was such a contagious joy to see kids and adults alike play with the glowing particles!

Lux Helsinki has cooperated with The Finnish Light Art Society FLASH in creating small exhibitions of light art in Kannelmäki Cultural house for some years. This year, there was this wonderful piece by Kirsti Taiviola, a glass bird flying crudely animated, and 3D shadows by Risto Puurunen. The shadows don't really work in photos, that's something you definitely need to see in person.

Melek Mazici's Rooms of Light was so very stylish and composed artwork, quite different from what I expected. It indeed was painting with light, instead of just coloring. Perks of my profession; I also got to see the artwork up close, with a funny hat and all!

I went to Lux Helsinki and it looked a little something like this.

In Yö Galleria there are three artists displayed in a lovely exhibition, and this one is Severi Haapala and his work Draw a/the line. The artwork is wonderfully simple: a line that is in slow, constant move – just like the timeline of history, which is not a straight line but ever changing, based on the point of view and new research.
