Kuikkapariskunta on vuosikausia pesinyt järven pienellä saarekkeella, mutta nyt ensimmäistä kertaa siihen on tehnyt laulujoutsen pesänsä. Toista saareketta ei järvellä ole ja sitä ympäröivät suositut luontopolut. Mistähän ne löytävät uuden pesimäpaikan vai jättävätkö pesimättä tänä vuonna?

Kuikkapariskunta – The black-throated Loon Couple
Kuikkien ääni yli tyynen järvenselän on yksi suomalaisten suosituimmista lintuäänistä. Kuikat ovat paikka- ja pariuskollisia, niin kuin monet pitkäikäiset lintulajit, ja ne viihtyvät rauhallisilla vesistöillä. Pesintöjä uhkaa mm. vesistöjen saastuminen, verkkokalastus, rantojen runsas mökkirakentaminen ja häiritsevä moottoriveneily. Suomessa pesii EU-alueen kuikista 60 %.

The call of black-throated loons over a calm lake is one of the most popular bird sounds among Finns. Loons are territorial and pair-bonded, like many long-lived bird species, and they thrive in calm waters. Nesting sites are threatened by, among other things, water pollution, net fishing, the extensive construction of cottages on the shores and disturbing motorboating. 60 % of the EU's loons breed in Finland.

Perhonen on valinnut reviirin, josta se ajaa muita perhosia pois, odotellen naarasta paikalle. Siinä välissä se lämmittelee auringossa ja imee mettä pajusta.

The butterfly has chosen a territory from which it drives other butterflies away, waiting for the female to arrive. In the meantime, it warms up in the sun and sucks nectar from the willow.
