Love is by Kevin Edworthy in Durham during the last Lumiere edition. I do like the quirky site-specificity, even though there were just drunk youngsters behind the corner at the time.

Glimmer, facilitated by Laura Brenchley, seen at Lumiere Durham 2025, is a wonderful example of a community based lightartwork often seen at festivals: a collection of lanterns. The lanterns may be done by a club, a workplace, by students or volunteers, or any group really, existing or gathered for the purpose – here, 400 community members from across County Durham. The process is a community-building one and the result gives pride for the makers, without too much pressure. The sheer volume makes these projects impressive, and a well chosen venue, like here, gives yet another layer for the whole.

I curated a similar-ish project for Lux Helsinki for some years, have to check if I have any decent photos of it.

Jony Easterby's multi-part The Garden of Shadows spread along the Lumiere route in the oldest Durham, with pieces to do with trees and other nature stuff. This part with a tulle projection was the largest. This artwork was, according to discussions and eavesdropping, a favourite of many light industry professionals, mine as well. Although, I think there was material for at least three artworks. Then again, with projections in general, it's usually around fifteen. So, well done!

Everyone Ever by Nighthouse Studio was a tad surprising choice for the Cathedral in Lumiere Durham. Usually, these kind of sites are reserved for flashy and colourful artworks, but Everyone was quite simple for a large projection in a site regarded as a main site of the festival. Respect for that!

Entanglement Is Existential (II) by Justin Brice Guariglia was a bold choice by Artichoke, the organiser of Lumiere festival in Durham, UK. Ultimately political, not pretty and not a feel-good thing at all. The artwork was multi-part, spattered around the festival area, repeating words and sentences related to climate change. As expected, most of the audience walked by and paid no attention at all, but I hope at least some did.
