My folks are drying out some doug-fir lumber that they sawed up on their small-scale mill (all from trees sustainably thinned out from a crowded forest). These will take some months to dry out, but once done, helps avoid cracking from shrinkage.

I don't think I mentioned that we got wood yesterday. I think I did. It is very wet. I'm hoping I'm just being paranoid about it being so wet, but there's some sign that it's stuff I wouldn't want in a use that I'm relying on it staying strong in a hidden location. We have a tester, but I'm not sure how good it is. The wood which is clearly drier than it was when we got it, is at 30% or there abouts. Not happy with that, as I'd like to not have to re-season wood that has been kiln dried. I'm hoping the fact it's been kiln dried, means it'll dry fairly quickly. #woodworking #lumber

There's a small, modern sawmill a few miles away, and these truckloads of logs pass by at least once a day.

The sawmill mostly cuts cottonwood (and some oak) into boards for pallet-making. They also cut oak and walnut into boards for woodworking.
