Lucanis wrapped his fingers around the warm mug as he leaned against the edge of her desk. Neve was bent over, scribbling on a piece of paper. Silva was resting on the narrow cot pushed against the wall. At least Silva had noticed when he entered. Neve was lost in her own world. He did not mind waiting for her to notice. In fact, he was coming to enjoy these moments when she was unaware of him. It was peaceful, quiet. And Silva being here meant he was not intruding. This might be a normal he could learn to accept.

Everything inside of him was twisting, a maelstrom making him spin out of control. It should be a simple thing. He should be able to answer Emmrich’s curiosity. Just the mention of The Ossuary made him want to puke. Spite was making it worse, rattling at the edges of his mind. Screaming to be freed, screaming his rage and indignation. Wanting to lash out. He was an Antivan Crow, a professional. He would control himself. He was not afraid. Just don’t think about it.

“My apologies. I should not have asked.” Considerate as always. It did not stop the screaming.

Lucanis came back into himself with a rush that almost eclipsed the circumstances he suddenly found himself in. He was face down in the sink with a large strong hand holding the back of his neck. Water poured from the spout next to his head and his wet hair hung in a sad curtain around him. He could hear shouting and the foul taste of something bitter but flowery on his tongue.

“Qué?!”

“Spit it out, Spite! You can’t eat soap!” Taash’s voice was frantic and loud. That explained the hand on his neck. And the taste in his mouth.
