@recommon on @reportrai3 about #Luangwa community forest Project, a REDD+ project for CO2 "compensation" credits.

Italian oil giant #Eni estimates 6 million tonn CO2 "saved" from the project by 2024. The problem? Deforestation in the area was overestimated. This project has almost no impact, and should not give any credit, despite what #Eni says.

#African #FossilFriday

The survivors of the #Permian #Extinction I mentioned last week included the #archosaurs, the lineage of #reptiles that includes #crocodiles, #dinosaurs, and #birds. This #fossil from the subsequent #Triassic is from a very close #dinosaur relative. Found in the #Luangwa Valley of #Zambia πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡², it was named Lutungutali sitwensis, #Bemba for "high hip" and named in honor of the village of Sitwe.

A new silesaurid from the upper Ntawere Formation of Zambia (Middle Triassic) demonstrates the rapid diversification of Silesauridae (Avemetatarsalia, Dinosauriformes)

Recent discoveries have shown that non-dinosaurian dinosauromorphs were morphologically diverse, globally distributed, and have a stratigraphic range extending into the Upper Triassic. Silesaurida...

#African #FossilFriday

Southern #Africa is one of the most important places in the world for understanding the #Permian, the period that ended with the largest #MassExtinction in #Earth's history. The valleys of the #Luangwa and #Zambezi in #Zambia πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡² are particularly rich in Permian fossils, including this #gorgonopsian on display at the #UniversityOfWashington's #BurkeMuseum. These impressive animals are #therapsids, close relatives of mammals and perhaps the first #sabertooths.
