Child of a former #slave, radical #LovettFortWhiteman died on #ThisDayInHistory in 1939 in a Soviet #gulag. He worked in the US with #IWW & against #lynchings, but moved to the #USSR in 1924, later settling there. He asked permission to return to the US in 1937, then disappeared.
