Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen VIVIZ -- “Love or Die” -- Dance Practice.
This track was released about a year ago on their “Various” album, and I must confess to not giving it a great deal of attention at that time. For this year’s tour, it has been choreographed by Kany, who also choreographed #TweetTweet and #Untie, and the result has impressed me; I now appreciate the Latin flavour much more as I watch the dance moves.
Dancing to Kany’s choreography has been part of a process whereby Eunha, Umji, and SinB have expressed more frequently and openly an adult allure. This expression does not mark a total break with their GFriend past, as any viewer of “Labyrinth”, “Apple”, or “Mago” can attest. Nevertheless, even though GFriend moved beyond the “powerful innocence” of the group’s beginnings, the mature glamour of VIVIZ has become a more salient aspect of the group’s identity than it could ever have been with GFriend. I love and will continue to love “Rough”, “Navillera”, and all the rest, but I also appreciate these idols transcending teen concepts.
The video is nicely filmed. If you’d like to see “Love or Die” in performance, I’m appending a fancam as a reply to this post.
