SODa Semantic Co-Working Space (Presentation)

🐶💙 Can service dogs impact veteran well-being? A study found that veterans with #PTSD service dogs had better emotional health and more positive social interactions but were less likely to leave home. 📊 See the visualized findings by Sarah Cecile Leighton, a runner-up in the #UniversityofArizona Libraries’ 2024 Data #Visualization Challenge: https://doi.org/10.25422/azu.data.25674897. Psychiatric service dog placements are associated with better daily psychosocial functioning for military veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder

A visual abstract reporting findings from a published manuscript (https://repository.arizona.edu/handle/10150/671095). We studied the emotional and social health of 168 veterans, with and without service dogs for posttraumatic stress disorder, directly in their daily lives. Veterans with service dogs had better emotional health and found social interactions more pleasant; they also had more activity participation but were less likely to leave home. This could be due to public stigma, suggesting education on service dog etiquette is needed. We found that using the dog’s trained tasks was particularly important for social health, and the dog’s presence for emotional health, shedding light on how service dog placements may lead to changes in veteran well-being. Keeping with the #LoveData25 theme, "Whose Data Is It, Anyway?", we're revisiting a Science story on Indigenous data sovereignty. The Global Indigenous Data Alliance is reshaping data sharing, protecting communities' rights while enabling research progress.

As COS's Nici Pfeiffer noted, "Data should be as open as possible, and as closed as necessary" because "the risk is that [Indigenous data] is being misused or mishandled in a way that doesn't protect its sovereignty."

It may be the last day of #LoveDataWeek but we love to celebrate data all year round, so to close out the week we’re bringing back our #ResearchRoundup.

Each month, we'll highlight unique and exciting research data that you can explore in Borealis.

🌿💚 Zum Valentinstag sagen wir DANKE! 💚🌿
