Most video editing software works by re-encoding, which is slow and, because it isn't lossless, makes videos look worse over time. This is especially frustrating when you just want to cut a little out of an existing video. Lossless Cut is an open source application for Linux, Windows, and Mac that can trim videos without the need for encoding.
So this is really useful for any odd jobs where you have to cut some large video (or audio) files into smaller segments - #LosslessCut is "The swiss army knife of lossless video/audio editing" (it's basically a very good GUI around #ffmpeg):
