36 years today since the #LomaPrieta earthquake.
I was in Santa Cruz near UCSC. Only 15 mi from the epicenter, but on stable ground. I was on the second floor of a condo, sitting on my bed, reading. I grew up in California, so I knew the drill: get under a table or in a door frame. But from experience, they usually never lasted long enough to do anything. Once I realized it wasn’t stopping, I jumped up and got in the door frame… of the closet, where a bunch of stuff proceeded to fall on me like tribbles on Capt. Kirk. 1/

Apparently his first quake was #LomaPrieta in 1989 (magnitude: 6.9)—quite the way to crack one's seismic cherry. His second earthquake was one I was present for as well: #Northridge, 1994 (6.7)
Was he just listing BIG quakes? Not sure, but his third was #Japan, 2011 (9.0) 🤯 WTF
We started at the lighthouse, standing on the Westcliff marine terrace. Here we discussed the Loma Prieta earthquake (1989) and if it is a "representative #earthquake" that explains the uplift of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Loma Prieta took place on a left-step in the San Andreas #Fault. Left-steps in Right Lateral Faults lead to compression and a thrust component. It is one way to build mountains. #LomaPrieta #SanAndresFault #SAF
