Historic preservation aside, maybe it is not a good idea to demolish a public space right as we enter an economic downturn that will make it impossible to construct new buildings anytime in the foreseeable future.
Even a cursory look for ridiculously wasted ground level car parking space (outlined in red) reveals what they don't want to admit: there's plenty of room for all the nifty outdoor stuff **and** a renovated Lloyd Center, too.
