Threefer Thursday: Little Feat’s Swamp Rock. By Mike V

I’ve been sick, folks. Almost too sick to write. So I was inspired to listen to “Rock and Roll Doctor” by Little Feat while I suffered. The good news? I’m on the upswing, and we’re going to focus on Little Feat’s effortless swamp rock this week as a result. Particularly the Lowell George era - up until 1979 when he broke up the band, and tragically died not long after....

Little Feat: Down on the Farm (Warner Bros HS3345, 1979)

I bought this album entirely because I love Souled American’s cover of “Six Feet of Snow.” But it’s really not my deal at all. Slick cocaine-infused soft rock. And the picture on the jacket is creepy and weird. I know people respect Lowell George but this is not for me.

Venice in snow, Venice, 1970. "Venice in the snow, or simply the Ocean Front Painting, was executed in the summer of 1970. The scene depicted is located about 1/2 mile north of the painting and is identical to the view one would see standing at that location on the Venice Boardwalk. However, there is no snow on the ground. It has never snowed in Venice. The work was commissioned by a local art patron whose only words were, 'I'd like you guys to paint a picture in the Venice area. Here's some money to do it.' Unfortunately, 'Venice in snow' became a 'victim of construction' only two years after it was created -- a tacky four unit apartment house built six inches away on the adjoining lot totally obscures the mural."

Used on the cover of Little Feat's debut LP from 1971.

Little Feat is the debut studio album by American rock band Little Feat, released in 1971 by Warner Bros. Records.

Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

...Little Feat's eponymous debut isn't just one of their finest records, it's one of the great lost rock & roll albums. Even dedicated fans tend to overlook the album, largely because it's the polar opposite of the subtly intricate, funky rhythm & roll that made their reputation during the mid-'70s. Little Feat is a raw, hard-driving, funny and affectionate celebration of American weirdness, equal parts garage rock, roadhouse blues, post-Zappa bizarreness, post-Parsons country rock and slightly bent folk storytelling. ..
