I disconnected from the electric grid for 8 months—in Manhattan

What started as an experiment has turned into a habit I hope will inspire others.

#introductions: my name is Glenn Graham. I’ve mostly lived outside of the U.S. in Central America since 2006. my fiancée and I are currently living on #LittleCornIsland, a tiny #CaribbeanIsland, off the coast of #Nicaragua.

we are dog-sitting for someone we connected with on FB. we managed to survive #HurricaneJulia which hit here as a Level 1 four weeks ago. the island was without power for 13 days. it was not nearly as difficult as we would have imagined.

this is my first toot. just checking things out. set up my account yesterday, followed some people, and now engaging.

I guess u could consider me part of the great #TwitterMigration. I will still be maintaining my account there, but I will start spending some of my time here.

@pluralistic (Cory Doctorow) was my first follow. I first discovered he posted on Mastodon a couple of years ago. I checked it out then, but really had no interest in diving deeper at the time.

feels much more like checking out the Internet and WWW in the 90s then just setting up a social media account.

the photo is of my morning view from our porch. it’s a bit cloudy. lots of rain overnight…
