I believe there should be more funding for early literacy in K to 3 and teacher professional learning.

It is important to increase the funding of K–12 education to improve the literacy rates of students.

Estimated historical #LiteracyRates, 1451 to 1701

I was looking for data on global historical literacy rates and this is something I found. Needless to say, the estimates are prone to large uncertainties but it is sobering to see that that before the 16th century, over 80% or populations were #illiterate. This would have meant that they were condemned to #poverty and prone to manipulation and subjugation by those in power, including religious organizations.

@VeroniqueB99
I recently read about how over half of the American population is at Level 1 Literacy (Grade 6 or lower). Together with how low the population is in some States, Trump and American political outcomes makes lots of sense in a dark #Absurdist way.πŸ˜– As a retired Canadian teacher (English, Developmental Literacy, Media Literacy, & Special Ed), I am struck with pity, despair, and anger. #America is being barely held together with spit and baling wire. Just how is it still standing?

Reading the numbers: 130 million American adults have low literacy skills β€” APM Research Lab

About 130 million adults in the U.S. have low literacy skills according to a Gallup analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Education. This means more than half of Americans between the ages of 16 and 74 (54%) read below the equivalent of a sixth-grade level.
