Just got some spare PC parts, lots of harddrives and a fibre internet....time to build some server stuff!

Of which i have zero experience!

What is a good distro for server machine? Are there any good tutorials for dummies?

Going to build remote storage server to for my friends and fellow secret antifa organization members.

Yes i looked and will search more on my own as well.

I think owning your own server space will be important in this age.

So I've been thinking about helping people get Linux installed on their laptops. I would go for the Debian installer with included firmware blobs by default. I usually just install the default Gnome desktop BUT maybe MATE would be a better choice for people coming from Windoze? Anyone here who regularly sets up noobs with Linux who can share their experience? #unplugtrump #linuxnoobs #linuxhelp

Kubuntu 24.10. Fresh install. Then installed the stupid Nvidia drivers. Then rebooted......and everything went fine! Then installed some apps, steam, flatpak, bunch of others. I'm done with distrohopping! (Yay!) Until I signed out and signed back in for the flatpaks to appear! And...black screen...

Things I vaguely understand from forums and brief web searches:

#Ubuntu (22.04) and Mint (21.1) bundle the 5.15 Kernel.

There are newer kernels like 6.2.

The kernel affects certain hardware support, like CPU features.

Linux version numbering is not left padded with zeroes - 5.15 is newer than 5.4

As a user, you can choose to update the kernel independently, but as a casual user, I'm probably better off being patient and waiting for a #LinuxMint update.

Linux 6.1 Officially Promoted To Being An LTS Kernel

Oooh I didn't know that I needed a "which files are where"/"which of these weird folders contains what kind of stuff" flowchart in my life but I definitely do https://askubuntu.com/a/551931

(is #linuxnoobs a hashtag that is a thing, i think I could learn a lot from it) https://computerfairi.es/media/lG7aPyT14hqMs5Ep8xI
