It is nice to be excited about a book I have to read for work.

This one is about #LinguisticLandscapes in the city of #Turku in Finland.

Mapping Diversity from OBC Transeuropa analyses street names in 32 European cities showing how many are named for men or women. Christianity skews the numbers just a bit as Mary takes top spot. https://mappingdiversity.eu/

Mapping Diversity

Mapping Diversity is a platform for discovering key facts about diversity and representation in street names across Europe.

During the GDR era, the #Berlin #district of #Kreuzberg developed into a hotspot for the #party and #art #scene: especially its area #SO36 that was surrounded by three border zones with the #GDR, forming a peninsula. A diverse #culturallife arose, persisting to this day. The musical "#Linie1" refers to the #UBahn line through SO36.

My proposal for Linguistic Landscape 16
Spaces of Collapse and Transformation
https://www.ll16-ude.de/ got accepted! Yeah! I got rejected two years ago on my first submission to LL 15, which was admittedly kinda weak and I was less experienced then. Making progress! Now, onto schedule and funding! (Oh yeah, and I have some work to do this spring! Reviewer comments were very helpful as to what I need to add.)

Wow! 🥳🎊 I received a copy of a book we wrote a chapter for with @tuomo and Hanna-Mari Pienimäki.

It's one thing to see one's own work published on a website, but another feeling when you can hold it in your hand.

If you're interested in #multilingualism #sociolinguistics #UrbanStudies and #LinguisticLandscapes check out this book. Relevant also for #UrbanGeography #HumanGeography #GIScience and #multimodality 🤓

The #OpenAccess book is available here: https://oa.finlit.fi/site/books/e/10.21435/sflin.24/

What a shame my interaction with a (very kind and helpful) DB employee at the railway station this morning was not recorded for linguistic analysis: I used Sie and she used Du. Neither of us budged, but in the end we still converged by avoiding personal pronouns together! 😇 #LinguisticLandscapes

“Like all borders, multipoints are variously the products of diplomats, conquerors, surveyors, committees, and natural features. These boundaries also divide, connect, sequester, demarcate, attract, and deter. But to me, multipoints will always be more magnetic than their binary counterparts, curious and complicated anomalies compared to those "ordinary" imaginary lines.
