Google's latest AOSP changes will complicate custom ROM development for Pixel devices. 🔧

With Android 16, the absence of device trees and driver binaries means developers will face significant challenges. 📉

This shift to Cuttlefish as the reference platform could hinder projects like GrapheneOS and LineageOS, making development much more difficult.

Google’s latest AOSP move spells doom for custom ROMs on Pixel phones

Google just made Pixel custom ROM development harder

Android Police
@benda probably worth double checking though: any #LineageOS aficionados know if Lineage uses an unmodified kernel from the device vendor, or what’s the story with that?

Custom ROMs are so over :( it feels like the end of an era.

(well, more like a dying cough after the amount of companies locking their bootloaders, not to mention play integrity & play services shit)

AOSP isn't dead, but Google just landed a huge blow to custom ROM developers

Google has confirmed it isn't discontinuing AOSP, but it's making a change that makes it harder for devs to build Android for Pixel phones.

Altra bella notizia! #lineageos

@rootcompute @StarkRG propblem is your options vary based off the device and firmware support (as per SoC & Baseband in it!)…

So basically you're forced to take what you can get.

  • As for @GrapheneOS they support very few devices (which is expected given their high demands!) so unless you have one of those you're most likely having only @LineageOS / #lineageOS and with some luck @e_mydata / #eOS...
i wonder: when are we gonna get #android 16 on #LineageOS...

Okay internet freaky people, I have a Google Pixel 4a (Sunfish) device that's been sitting in a drawer pretty much since unboxing. I installed #grapheneos on it a month or so ago, but on first boot got a notification that the device is no longer supported. #calyxos is EOLing it in August, and their web installer doesn't support it now. #lineageos _does_ support it, but there is enough of a time investment in making it happen that I may as well consider more... outré setups.

Sooo, any recommendations? Doesn't need to be an Android variant, as long as it's #linux or #bsd under the hood and I can get a shell on it.

I always hesitated to install #lineageos on my unsupported #POCOM3 Pro smartphone.
But yesterday it finally happened.

Flashing a new #android image is cumbersome. I needed multiple attempts to finish all steps (unlocking, `fastboot`, `boot.img`, `adb sideload` and reset) and for pressing the right buttons at reboots.

But now I'm proud to see my device fully functional in a new UI.
The unofficial image for my phone works without problems, as far as I can see.

Thanks to all contributors! 🥰

Ich habe ein neues* Handy und es ist wahnsinn wie schnell die ganzen Apps nun sind 🏎️ 💨
