The Poem with No End

A human is a meager thing in such immensity, the way a little shoe is small on the stones where unknown travelers hoped for amnesty. And though the mother and father searched a lifetime, all that was ever seen was a shoe, the small cold shoe washed up on dark stone.

We Lived

We Lost Ones love the birds. The birds also love the tides that pass beneath us each day, and once in the sea-dark night we shared the same dream, keeping watch on one another. If the tides forget to pass beneath our home at a given time, we forgive the waters for changing. They know we sing to…

The Room of the Elder

Still, you do in all truth want to wake this morning, and you must keep away the envious who wish to take you with them. In this home of being, this great human cosmos, there’s meaning in each enchanted body room where elders dwell and want to be always awake in the room of morning sun.

A Story

She read about a bedfast woman who heard a wild snail eating leaves beside her bed. She, the woman, lived with that beautiful snail beside her. We are kin of the same ilk, and always I want to walk away with her, the young, across the winter shine of the universe, away from the body curve still…

Butterfly - by Linda Hogan(Emergence Magazine)

In the strong earth fragrance

I am part of the tree,

held against it. Brother, Sister,

we came from the cellular division,

its math already figured

many thousands of years

in the beginning,

in the far distance

of the journey,

the fragrance of leaves,

the taste of dew.

I was part of the tree, feeling

the leaves so heavy with

that morning damp,

awaiting the spectacle of sunset,

the evening blue, that vision of night.

Long ago, intruders

forced us to cross this land to the Black Prairie,

where glow worms shine all night

part of the magic of their life.

We traveled the ledge above a river

to the Long House village.

We are the clan of crossings

and the young transformed themselves,

opened their silk, crossed into full,

wing life to fly with all others

at once indigo blue, cerulean, their beauty

leaving us behind to watch,

knowing we crossed time

into the swarm of trees.

This generation; it is time to hunger,

each life still and watching the young

take again to our ways.

We look back and look forward,

remember the beginning.

We remember the milk of stars,

and drink the light.
