Onde gravitazionali: il nuovo catalogo raddoppia le collisioni cosmiche osservate

New catalog more than doubles the number of gravitational-wave detections made by LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA observatories
The latest crop of space-time wobbles includes a variety of heavy, fast-spinning, and lopsided colliding black holes.

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) consists of two widely separated installations within the United States — one in Hanford Washington and the other in Livingston, Louisiana — operated in unison as a single observatory. LIGO is operated by the LIGO Laboratory, a consortium of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Funded by the National Science Foundation, LIGO is an international resource for both physics and astrophysics.

Did you know that witches.town, one of the first really popular Mastodon instances, used the sound of two black holes merging, registered by the @LIGO, as its notification sound?
And since eldritch.cafe intend to preserve its predecessor’s legacy, we still do the same.
I give you ... #Caltech Heritage material. Shaun Maguire, racist scumbag, Sequoia Capital something-or-other, former DOGE department guy, #ElonMusk pal, whatever else.
Truly there isn't a better living representative of what the California Institute of Technology has given the world. Oh I know what you're thinking: what about #JPL? What about #LIGO? I suggest that the splashy press coverage about pulsar collisions and NASA missions in which Caltech plays some peripheral role aren't really what Caltech is all about, and certainly not what the Caltech founders had in mind.
The California capitalists who were pivotal to the formation of the California Institute of Technology, men such as Ezra Gosney and Albert Ruddock and Harry Chandler, not to mention #Nobel laureate physicist Robert Andrews Millikan, may have had some dispassionate interest in scientific truth. But they were also zealous in the pursuit of "human betterment" (q.v. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Betterment_Foundation ) in a cruder, far more direct sense. They wished to purge humanity of the unfit, and cultivate only the finest and presumably palest of young men (women play but a subsidiary role in "human betterment" of this sort) to build a shiny and sciency future for the United States of America, or at least for certain parts of California.
