New catalog more than doubles the number of gravitational-wave detections made by LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA observatories

The latest crop of space-time wobbles includes a variety of heavy, fast-spinning, and lopsided colliding black holes.

New catalog more than doubles the number of gravitational-wave detections made by LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA observatories

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) consists of two widely separated installations within the United States — one in Hanford Washington and the other in Livingston, Louisiana — operated in unison as a single observatory. LIGO is operated by the LIGO Laboratory, a consortium of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Funded by the National Science Foundation, LIGO is an international resource for both physics and astrophysics.

Onde gravitazionali e costante di Hubble: un nuovo metodo per risolvere la “tensione” dell’universo

A double cosmic explosion could be the first known ‘#superkilonova
The blast may have come from a collision of tiny #neutronstars forged in a #supernova
#Astronomers have spotted a distant #star that seems to have exploded twice. U.S.-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or #LIGO, and the Virgo detector in Italy detected ripples in spacetime coming from a pair of neutron stars merging about 1.8 billion light-years away.

A double cosmic explosion could be the first known ‘superkilonova’

The blast may have been a kilonova — a type of neutron star merger — in the wake of a more traditional supernova.

Did you know that witches.town, one of the first really popular Mastodon instances, used the sound of two black holes merging, registered by the @LIGO, as its notification sound?
And since eldritch.cafe intend to preserve its predecessor’s legacy, we still do the same.

Vandaag 10 jaar geleden https://sailing-dulce.nl/home/article-4778 #zwaartekrachtgolven #ligo #Virgo #turtles Woensdag 10-02-2016 Breaking news?
"Exceptional tests of general relativity with GW250114" by @LIGO - Gravitational Wave #GW250114 detected over a year ago provided the clearest (best signal to noise) data yet on a black hole merger. The year that it took for #LIGO, Virgo & KAGRA to gather the data and write a peer-reviewed paper now yields results. It shows EVERY test that could be applied to Einstein's Relativity passed. These conditions were only theoretical in his time. https://ligo.org/exceptional-tests-of-general-relativity-with-gw250114/ #astronomy #physics #science

I give you ... #Caltech Heritage material. Shaun Maguire, racist scumbag, Sequoia Capital something-or-other, former DOGE department guy, #ElonMusk pal, whatever else.

Truly there isn't a better living representative of what the California Institute of Technology has given the world. Oh I know what you're thinking: what about #JPL? What about #LIGO? I suggest that the splashy press coverage about pulsar collisions and NASA missions in which Caltech plays some peripheral role aren't really what Caltech is all about, and certainly not what the Caltech founders had in mind.

The California capitalists who were pivotal to the formation of the California Institute of Technology, men such as Ezra Gosney and Albert Ruddock and Harry Chandler, not to mention #Nobel laureate physicist Robert Andrews Millikan, may have had some dispassionate interest in scientific truth. But they were also zealous in the pursuit of "human betterment" (q.v. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Betterment_Foundation ) in a cruder, far more direct sense. They wished to purge humanity of the unfit, and cultivate only the finest and presumably palest of young men (women play but a subsidiary role in "human betterment" of this sort) to build a shiny and sciency future for the United States of America, or at least for certain parts of California.

@slembcke At the scales involved, I cannot comprehend how they've managed to avoid mirror misalignment from all the mouse footsteps and tectonic plate movement.

Dubbele kosmische explosie geeft geboorte aan ongekende ‘superkilonova’
In een bizarre wending bracht een supernova twee neutronensterren voort die samensmolten tot een krachtige kilonova.
