I purposely overexposed this shot of the night sky above #Reykjavik Harbour in order to try and bring out more of the details through the light pollution.

See how I edited this seemingly disastrous of a shot to pull back the highlights and bring out the #aurora in the night sky above Reykjavik Harbour.

Howard Cheng | Travel Photographer on Instagram: "This might have looked like an overexposure mistake, but it's not. When I'm photographing the aurora under light pollution, or if it's a relatively dim / a weaker display, I'll often overexpose my shot without clipping the highlights to allow my camera to capture more information in that file. Then, in post, I... 1️⃣ Drop the exposure the bring back the night sky. 2️⃣ Increase contrast. 3️⃣ Dehaze the scene. It looks scary on the back of the camera, but it gives me way more data in the file to work with when the sky is bright. This technique is called "expose to the right" or "ETTR" as it means pushing your histogram as far to the right as you can whilst not clipping your highlights. 📍 Reykjavík Harbour, Iceland. 📷 Leica Q3 | ISO 1600, 10 seconds, f/1.7. 💻 Edited with Lightroom Mobile. @visitreykjavik, @lightroom, @leica_camera, @leicauk. #AuroraBorealis #NorthernLights #Reykjavik #PhotographyTips #LightroomEdits"

The moon was out for a few hours on Saturday morning. Though I’d try another shot with the big blue in the background.
