I have a thing for lightartworks placed in wrong places. Luke Jerram's Mars in Bolton's library during the Put The Big Light On festival was definitely one of them. The weirdest contrast was the thing that made it all interesting.

Doncaster Festival of Light had a genial concept: instead of spattering the limited budget to several artworks, they use the whole sum for just one larger piece. This year it was Refik Anadol's Machine Hallucinations: Large Data Model, at Doncaster Minster.

During the Residency, I had a pleasure to see two artworks by Heinrich & Palmer. Both based on archive mining, visualised simply, informationally and interestingly. I'm not sure if the two latter are actually words, but never mind. Anyhow, this is Ship of the Gods in Light Up Wakefield. I especially appreciated the wall lights changing their colour according to the projection.

In Light Up Wakefield I met an old acquaintance, Illumaphonium's Halo. It sure is well done, seeing the kids (and adults) playing with it with no silk gloves on. As they have for several occasions. And it still works. Amazing!

Sight Lines by Venessa Scott is a trip to the King Street back in time, when it was a epicentre of young people having fun. The colourful projections made the street vividly alive again, and even I could feel nostalgic, even though never been there before, young or old.

In the first image the artist in front of the artwork, telling about it, the second depicts youngsters of today giving their opinion about the artwork.

Colour Rush by Liz West had its origins from paint tests, ending up in a tower of colour, reflected from its base. It is a part of the continuum that is Ms. West working with colour.

What's Mine is Yours by Tom Biddulph is a play of words, referring both to the mining history of the area and hospitality, much in demand during these times.

Community and engagement were admirably quintessential in Northern England light festivals we visited, and that's really something to learn from. Here's Gemma from Things That Go On Things leading a tour in Light Night Wigan, telling about a project where kids drew their heroes and the drawings were reproduced in light. Here, Keely Hodgkinson by Ruby (10).
