The obvious solution would be to stop allowing more cars.
If that ain't possible, just take a page from the European playbook and add fractional numbers at the end.

Got curious after writing this post. Looked it up: there are dozens of types of specialized plates offered here in Minnesota.

@wiert in the wake of the #RAF terrorism in the 70's, #Germany developed a font for license plates with some features for improved readability, making forgeries harder, allowing for easier machine readability etc. - it's called #FESchrift and has been since been adopted by many countries across the world:
