Speaking of the #SoloRPGbookclub , we were sitting and thinking about our experiences with Princess with a Cursed Sword and Letters from the Liberty Motel, and wrote about 1.8k words about storytelling prompts in roleplaying games. Free blog post [edit: same on both sites], hope you like them.

Repetition Vs. Specifics

Okay, we are three rolls into Day 2 and we've already vetoed two duplicate die rolls - we're gonna call it here.

Letters from the Liberty Motel has an interesting premise, and the prompts go super hard in cool ways. Each room works as a story. Each room works as a story for our character - we brought back their powers, their history, their resentments and regrets, in really fun ways. The problem for us is that, at the level of the game, the story has no time to establish, no time to build, and also nowhere to go - we hit the same room prompts over and over, and they are just too specific to support random repetition.

We'd love to hear if other folks tried the game and what their experiences were, but that was ours.

We are two and a half hours and fourteen hundred words in and we have completed one day.

I think our worry right now is that the prompts are a bit too specific, for how many we have to do and how long the game is meant to last. There were four rooms in our first day, and there's only ten room prompts in total. If this game lasts ... I mean, page 5 makes it sound like six days, but from the Overnight rules it looks like it'll only be three? But three days times four rooms is twelve. And the prompts are a lot less open and flexible than in Princess with a Cursed Sword.

We definitely picked the right character to throw into the Motel, though. Y'all won't get the references we're making to events from our old game, but we do.

Got out the PDF and started the prep phase for our book club game of Letters from the Liberty Motel.

Ended up deciding to revive an old character from a horror/cyberpunk game - the part where your character has what they are known by and that might not be their real name made us think of them, and it might be fun to see how their backstory interacts with this game's ideas.

We don't usually reuse characters in multiple things, but lately we've started doing so - it's pretty fun thinking about what they would be like in a new context.

(edit: cyberpunk, not cyberpuke)

Okay, for June-July the Solo RPG Book Club will be playing Letters from the Liberty Motel by Adam Vass. I'm going to suggest we use #LibertyMotel for posting about the game (you don't need to post game logs) alongside the main #SoloRPGbookclub hashtag - we'll watch both.

Again, this game costs US$5, but if you need a copy, you can leave a reply or send a DM and we'll try to get you sorted out.

Have fun, everybody!
