@hydrian @shollyethan Well, it's not exactly dying. Yes, the popular #irc networks of the 90s have lost a lot of users when social media became popular in the mid-2000s, but numbers have been somewhat stable since the beginning of the decade. Most still have ~10k users, #liberachat has 30k. There are also many other newer networks which are very active and still growing, #hackint is an example (crossed the 10k mark in 2024, still gaining more users).

I have a kind of running New Years tradition that I join the Libera (and before that, Freenode) IRC official New Years channel. I've been doing IRC since 1999 and it just kinda feels like home =)

Well then. #LiberaChat has decided that my ISP is suspicious enough to require a SASL connection, for which I need to register with their nickserv... for which I first need to connect from another IP. Guess what, it's nowhere near that important for me.

This is how the open internet dies.

Looks like a bunch of Internet trolls just wrote an IRC bot to join all #IRC channels of all public IRC servers on the whole Internet, bridging their own channel to the world for broadcasting racial slurs...

On #LiberaChat, it lasted 10 minutes before it was K-Lined by sysops, and they're still trying to make a come back based on my logs (update: they did it on and off for hours with different botnet IPs).

Just signed off of #liberachat while their relays are being invaded and all sorts of racist messages are being sent out globally on all channels. I wish the @liberachat admins all the best!
