Between watching CitrusCon and doing other things this weekend, I finally watched a few episodes of #StrangerThings (I'm 8 years late with this) and it occurred to me that its shallow fantasy plot and the popularity of this kind of TV series is part of why people flock to irrational, unscientific but easy to follow "explanations" of crisises like covid-19.
It's kinda ironic that as an actual 80s kid, I learned how to check sources and not waste my time on TV. In this #LiarsDividend consumption era, however, it's easier than ever to confuse facts, opinions and fantasy. Netflix feeds us as if we are the main hero of our own life story nowadays, clear, entertaining and technology-free like in the 80s, where every crumb of information has to be true and part of some bigger and conspiracy-like plot, and where we have learned to ignore consistency plot holes as if they are accepted.
I'm not blaming anybody, I just wished that we kept up with reality better.
