It is super important to set small goals when writing a novel and not push past them. Trying to write 10k a day is a fun experiment, but not sustainable in the long term. If you want a career you need to be able to set small goals and keep them small.

A really easy way to show a character's progression through a book is in the little details like clothes they wear or meals they have. You can have them wearing colors that match their home team, or their enemy's colors. You can have them craving a good meal that one side character likes.
