@jemmesedi The #Liaden series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. The first book and another one that's a reasonable entry point are available as free ebooks on the Baen Free Library. Agent of Change is the first Fledgling is another good entry point. Relationships, family, clashes of culture, the odd sentient turtle and cats. One of the books has a linguistics scholar as one of the protagonists.

Well, I took a brief pause in my Discworld re-read to look at Ribbon Dance, the recently released #Liaden universe book by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller now that I have the eARC and done the tasks I promised I would do first. About half way through but tonight's to-do list also demanded my attention.

I was thinking about other tales that made a big impression on me. Miller&Lee did a story that is not directly in their #Liaden works, & damage from poorly shielded radiation had part of the story line.

I think A WOMAN OF THE IRON PEOPLE stands out. Not only great First Contact, but the members of the crew receiving messages that have chased the ship 100 yrs. A ship faction still has political zeal for things their descendants no longer mention. So the communications people lie.

I have been doing a reread of the #liaden universe (at least the main story line from Agent of Change on) and have now reached the most recent release 'Salvage Right'. Sometimes its nice to tie up some of those loose ends, at least before things get really interesting somewhere else. #books #bookstodon #sf #SpaceOpera

@Edelruth @mrawdon Have you tried the #Liaden Universe series by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller? (I found out about them via a Bujold mailing list). First and another good entry point are in the Baen Free Library but Sharon says people can start wherever really. Some bits just make a bit more sense if you've read the ones chronologically before. But not necessary.

@ashenwave Have you read any of the #Liaden universe yet by Sharon Lee & Steve Miller (no, not the politician). First and another entry point book available at the baen free library ('Agent of Change' was the first, 'Fledgling' is an alternate entry point) but I enjoy them all. Space opera, clash of cultures, bit of psionics/magic, cats, sentient Trees, spaceships, trade, and 9 ft tall turtles with long long names.
