A ★ review of Santo vs. the Vampire Women (1962)

This movie's USP, what separates it from a bland “you have a one week and the backlot” B-picture is the presence of a mask wrestler only there’s not much Santo in it. You could cut almost all of his scenes (especially the wrestling match which already looks like stock-footage) which out changing the plot. Leaving you with a bland B-picture.

[Positive statement about 'Spirited Away']

A ★★★ review of Spirited Away (2001)

This is one of those stealth coming of age stories; it’s about someone growing up out of childhood, that’s character arc, but it doesn’t feature any of the traditional coming of age story beats. The life lessons sneak up on you.

'The Last Boy Scout' is a buddy cop movie without the buddy part.

A ★★ review of The Last Boy Scout (1991)

So everybody sucks and nobody got along. Normally behind the scenes gossip wouldn’t matter much but you can tell that nobody was having fun. I find myself wondering what the darker more cynical version looks like and yet I’m glad that Bruce Willis threw a hissy about this script (which was called ‘Die Hard’ before ‘Die Hard’) was too much like ‘Die Hard’ because that’s the only reason we got Danielle Harris. Not only is she the best part of this picture but her arrival marks an overall improvement in quality. You would not believe how low I would have

I’m going to summarize my reviews of all four ‘Lethal Weapon’ movies in a single post:

The first film is a solid buddy cop picture more interested in character than the mystery.
The second is a refined, focused continuation.
The third misunderstands why the second worked.
The fourth adds trend chasing to the mix.

A ★★★½ review of Lethal Weapon (1987)

There’s like three climaxes to this picture, the entire last half hour of this is set piece after piece separated enough to keep from being overwhelming which means they’re separated enough to be separate. Hence the three climaxes thing. It’s not really a problem because the movie isn’t about the case, it isn’t about stopping the bad guys, it’s about these cops becoming buddies (which is arguably the core of all buddy cop movies). Part of what elevates that story is that both Riggs and Murtaugh start at relatively low points, Riggs being significantly lower, so this friendship saves them

A ★★★ review of Dinner with Leatherface (2024)

There's little in the way of production here, just a bunch of edited together interview clips with former TCSM cast and crew, Bruce Campbell (cause why not) and others who've worked with Gunnar Hansen over the years. And some amazingly cheeseball title cards. What emerges is a portrait of a poet, intellectual and extremely funny person who seems universally missed. Definitely takes brains to make an iconic character with just physicality, no facial expression and no intelligible speech.
