Triplets of Belleville

🎬 watched Les Triplettes de Belleville (2003)

Released in USA as Triplets of Belleville, and I’m amused to see in UK and Ireland as a third title Belleville Rendez-vous.

As two film enthusiasts living in Los Angeles, my partner and I do not watch many together at home. We make dates to visit theaters, and share scenes while in motion during monday night fort90 film clubs. Sitting down to our modest projected setup and sorting out the audio was a special event and a treat to itself.

First impressions were such fun on a striking and enchanting ride into a surreal and groovy opening scene. The visual and sound design continued to surprise and delight up to the final car chase scene, where the story lost me in an aversion to excessive gunfire and pointlessly violent car chase. The experience overall far surpassed expectations and is one of the most unique animations I’ve enjoyed in a long time!

It has now been a few weeks since watching and the visual experience stuck with me, especially the repeat views from in front of the lead son rocking back and forth on his bicycle. While searching today for loops of these views, I was also reminded how catchy and happy the overall musical themes are from the triplet stars themselves.

The elder triplets finding and adopting the mother and dog through shared music and frog soup are such a sweet story of tenderness and discovered love between strangers. I found this obscured on first watch between the darkness of the mafia kidnappings and humans as horses on bikes.

This is definitely worth re-watching as there is so much detail in the animation style and scenes I know I missed. I expect to further enjoy the elder triplets story, and the irony of their household instruments. At 1 hour 22 minutes, it’s a quick and other-worldy trip into animation land I’m so happy to look forward to again.

Highly recommended for fans Cowboy
Beebop, Tour de France and cycling culture, cityscapes, Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli, and jazzy grooves.

I watched and wrote about this as encouraged by the IndieWeb Movie Club for July, and a personal endeavor to post. Thanks to Mark Sutherland for this month’s suggestion!

It's not every day you set a new personal best, so I wrote about it, probably pretty badly.

On the occasion of a record breaking ride « Kenny Smith | A remarkable thing happens …

A Competitive Cyclist e-mail offers a promo code. Exclusions apply. The exclusions: bikes and frames. Reasonable.

Looked for things I need … They weren’t included in the exclusions, but they were excluded.

So I invoke Smith’s First Law of Economics: Don’t make it hard for me to spend my money with you.

If all of the views from today’s 50-miler looked like this I’d never get off my bike.

I’ve been off social media for about eight hours and that was a great feeling. (Three hours on the bike didn’t hurt, either.)

Opened some apps to catch up and it’s the same malaise and ennui.

Anyway, here are some geese that flew over during my ride. Get away from all of this when you can.

This evening’s 35-miler took a bit longer than expected because I had to break out ol’ Sometimes Helpful Hand Pump. It did it’s job, after some coaxing …

To be fair, my pump is about 15 years old and has been dropped, at speed, several times.

Relatedly, if you have a recommendation for a hand pump that will 1.) fit in a jersey pocket and 2.) fill a tube with air, and not me with roadside regret … I am in the market.

Because I can’t treat the whole post as a pull quote …

“Why do we postpone the things we love in favor of responsibility and rigid structure to our days? We only have so many of them.”

An Adult on a Bicycle - Alexandersmap

“Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of the human race.”― H.G. Wells It’s hard to believe I went years without riding a bicycle. I mean, I had two hanging in the garage just waiting for me all that time. When the time came I had...

Bike racing is beautiful.

Erudite wheelmen would speak of the hum of their wheels, the grip of bar tape, bidons.

Poets would write of the power and purpose of getting back into the drops. Really, it's heart and joyful freedom.

Freedom to ride hard, to soft pedal, to weave over the road like a kid. Freedom to try on that hill, or to not. And the thrill of coming down the other side, no matter the effort on the way up.

Already, it feels like a great year of riding.

2/2

I haven’t ridden my bike in two weeks — travel, work, rest, low-key letting a foot pain subside.

Let’s see if I still know which way the pedals go.

Still on the winter trainer, thanks weather, so the stakes are pretty low, but still. Two weeks!
