Il caso-Sigonella ha sollecitato le rievocazioni del 1985, quando Bettino Craxi disse no agli Usa. E i comunisti, che pure lo detestavano, presero ad applaudirlo per la sua posizione contro Reagan. E i compagni lo fanno ancora, citando l'episodio dell'85 come una pagina di gloria nazionale. I caccia americani avevano intercettato e dirottato verso Sigonella l'aereo egiziano dove si trovavano i terroristi palestinesi che avevano preso possesso di una nave da crociera, uccidendo spietatamente e buttando a mare con tutta la carrozzella un uomo paralitico, l'ebreo americano Leon Klinghoffer.
Gli Usa volevano prelevare i terroristi e portarli negli Stati Uniti. Ma Craxi disse no, rivendicando il diritto dell'Italia a processarli qui. Seguirono ovazioni anche da sinistra. Risultato? I terroristi fuggirono, e l'Italia mostrò un volto assai meno glorioso: un opaco doppio binario, a parole con Usa e Israele ma nei fatti con silenzi e complicità a favore del terrorismo mediorientale. Ripensando alle posizioni di quei giorni, ebbe molta più ragione Giovanni Spadolini, che polemizzò con la scelta craxiana. Destino curioso, quello del leader socialista. Applaudito per una sua decisione discutibile, e invece detestato per le sue scelte più coraggiose.
Aveva ragione Craxi nel sostegno ai dissidenti oppressi dal regime sovietico, mentre quegli altri ancorasi abbracciavano con Breznev. Aveva ragione lui sul garantismo: mentre gli altri preferivano l'uso politico della giustizia. E aveva ragione lui su una linea economica più dinamica, mentre gli altri erano inchiodati alle battaglie di retroguardia della Cgil. Ma oggi quelli che lo hanno lapidato in vita e post mortem cantano inni per Sigonella.
Ps È un'ottima notizia che l'Ordine dei giornalisti abbia accolto il ricorso di Maurizio Molinari, che era stato punito per aver «osato» evocare in tv le sanzioni Usa contro Francesca Albanese. La libertà di parola ancora esiste, pur precaria. Difendiamola.

Reflecting on the positions of those days, Giovanni Spadolini was right to argue with Craxi’s choice. Curious fate of the socialist leader. Applauded for a questionable decision, and instead hated for his most courageous choices.
He was right about supporting dissidents oppressed by the Soviet regime, while those others remained anchored with Brezhnev. He was right about garantism: while others preferred the political use of justice. And he was right about a more dynamic economic line, while others were stuck in the rear guard battles of the CGIL. But today those who condemned him in life and after death sing hymns for Sigonella.
P.S. It’s good news that the Order of Journalists has accepted Maurizio Molinari’s appeal, who had been punished for “daring” to evoke US sanctions against Francesca Albanese on television. Freedom of speech still exists, albeit precarious. Let’s defend it.
