#AntiColonial resistance often takes violent forms, which makes sense given how much #colonialism depends upon violence. On #ThisDayInHistory in 1791, warriors from #Lenape & #Wyandot nations carried out the #BigBottomMassacre in Ohio, killing nine men, one woman, & two children.
In Sept. 1812, during the #WarOf1812, numerous American forts in #Indiana were struck by #Potawatomi & #Miami warriors. On #ThisDayInHistory the two-day #BattleOfMississinewa broke out between the US & those tribes. A #Lenape village was also attacked. Both sides claimed victory.
Before Tottenville had its name, the Lenni Lenape called this place Aquehonga Monocknong — sandy banks and spirited forest. Their matrilineal society was remarkably progressive: women elders could remove male leaders they deemed unfit. They lived communally, moved with the land's rhythms, and thrived on the abundant oysters of Raritan Bay.

Did you know?
The history of Tottenville begins as all history in the United States begins — with the indigenous people already living here. In Tottenville, that would be the Lenni Lenape.
