This tea is a relatively new addition to my daily-drinker rotation. It has a bit of a story behind it; a mixture of craftsmanship, government targeted growth, and corporate philanthropy.

This tea is 雷山红梅茶 (Léishān Hóngméi Chá, Leishan Red Plum Tea). Leishan is in a very economically depressed area of China and is a target for economic development. For this, it works with the philanthropic division of the Alibaba Group. That group tends to go into areas, identify possibilities for enhancing the economics, then helps set up the infrastructure needed to capitalize on it. In Guizhou the obvious economic choice in the mountains is tea; Guizhou tea plantations are in high-quality terroir, but for a variety of reasons is not often consumed outside of Guizhou (part of it being transportation).

This tea is a Leishan clone of a famous tea: 九曲红梅茶 (Jiǔqū Hóngméi Chá, Jiuqu Red Plum tea) which itself has a fascinating story I will someday explore. It is currently the only "red" (we'd say "black") tea of the 28 famous teas of Zhejiang. It has a famous processing of withering, rolling, oxidization, and drying. And masters from Zhejiang were hired to teach the tea producers of Leishan how to do the same with their own tea. The result is an intriguing tea that has the floral notes you'd expect from a high-mountain Chinese red like a Dianhong, but with a walnut-astringent overlay that tastes, of all things, like a high-grade Assam.

Because it's part of a development program, it is sold at subsidized prices (with the Alibaba Group making up the difference as part of their philanthropy) under new production and distribution infrastructure, all as part of establishing the tea in the broader tea culture of China; I'm evidence of the process working.

A while back I presented a queue of teas that I would be showing (which I almost immediately jumped with other teas). In that queue was this black tea from 贵州雷山 (Leishan, Guizhou) which is the heart of 苗族 (Miao Nationality) territory: https://pixelfed.social/i/web/post/761086324891990169. Then I got a few more interesting teas and inserted them into the queue ahead of the next tea from the same place.

So today it's the other tea from Leishan that I'm going to be doing: 雷山云雾茶 (Léishān Yúnwù Chá or Leishan Cloud and Mist Tea). Like everything else called a Cloud and Mist tea this is a high mountain tea and …

… unfortunately it's a mediocre one for the grade. I feel bad for being so harsh in this review of it, but it's a bit bland, despite the production of it being top-notch and the black tea made from the same leaves being so intriguing and nice. The black tea is in my rotation; this tea is not. So at least I'll be able to buy tea from economically disadvantaged Miao regions of China. It just won't be this one.

Now don't get me wrong: this is a fine tea, likely better than most of the teas people drink in the west. It's picked and produced perfectly. It's just that the actual leaves can't compare to the literally hundreds of other kinds of high quality greens that surround me. The black is world class tea, but this … really isn't.

Today's tea comes from the backlog I showed earlier. The next tea I upload today will not be coming from that backlog because it came by surprise. (This is foreshadowing.) This tea is a 红梅茶 (hóng méi chá or red plum tea) from 贵州雷山 (Leishan, Guizhou) which is the heart of 苗族 (Miao Nationality) territory. It is one of the economically deprived areas of China that the current government is now working on developing, and the Ali group has targeted with its philanthropy and charity program. In this program, local products are given a promotional boost: the two 50g packets of fine tea I got cost me 0.14¢ US (yes ¢, not $). The intent is that the promotion motivates people to try things outside of their sphere of familiarity in the hopes that they will enjoy the result enough to buy more. It worked. This is a delightful little tea, though it is very finicky and not at all what I would term a "beginner's tea". In the hands of someone experienced, however, it produces a very nice brew and I will be buying Leishan tea again. (It doesn't hurt that I really like the Miao as a culture, mind.) As is usual the alt text has more explanations, and Mastodon users will have to click through to get all the pictures.
