The mourning tents were removed yesterday and we went to visit my father in law on his farm. Very scenic views, flats on one side, mountains on the other. Also lots of different animals. The weather was nice as well, so we spent the whole day outside and ended with a nice barbecue. Lumi found a penny board and taught herself to ride it over the course of the day.

We had an amazing breakfast this morning – the best we've had in a couple of weeks (re. still no kitchen back in Germany). On the way back from the restaurant, we passed many new houses built since the earthquake, but also quite a few that have fallen into disrepair around here – most of them, from what I am told, because the former owners passed away and the families haven't been able to settle their affairs. My wife is spending most of the day in the mourning tent, talking to various visitors and making tea. The tents will be up for one more day tomorrow. Also: Bayramın kutlu olsun! (Since it is the first day of Ramazan Bayramı.)

Got almost everything out of the old apartment today. We are going to make some pizza there tomorrow as the final act, then our yer sofrası (floor table) can move over as the last thing – and we'll be done moving! Only the final cleanup left after that. Self Reflection in the (new) kitchen window.

Went to Parkleuchten again with the family and a couple of friends today. It wasn't quite as packed as yesterday so I had some more room to photograph. The first installation is really cool. Glad I was able to capture the tiny lights projected onto the ceiling. Lumi brought her camera as well and took this great portrait of me. ❤️

Lowering life’s min requirements: 📸 edition

I just let go of most of my camera gear I’ve acquired over the last 20 years – 3 camera bodies, 5 lenses and batteries, filters etc. I just cleaned them all for the final time, packed them carefully into backpacks for maximum protection and sent them all to MPB.

A part of me is sad to have let go of some of my favorite instruments I’ve used and taken care of – well. I hope they bring as much joy to their next owners as I had with them.

This is the first of a series of steps H and I are taking to lower life’s requirements. Since Om launched into our life, our default mode has been to add more resources to life as soon as it’s demanded it. We moved to a bigger home, bought a bigger car, paid for private school, bought him all the toys he wanted. We are thankful and grateful that we were able to do so. However, after a decade, it feels like we are carrying a lot of burden. There’s a lot of hidden costs – physical and mental to this acquisition syndrome. It’s going to be a quarter of shedding for us (stay tuned). Early signs are that the sages of the past were wise for a reason. There is a lightening of the load and let’s see how long that continues.

However, I am also a fan of endings. I wanted to use the opportunity and memorialize these marvels of design and technology and the joy they brought me.

Leica Q (Typ 116)

My first picture with the Leica Q (Typ 116)

The Leica Q was a delight. I purchased it to take pictures of Om and family. It was a constant companion in the 9 years it’s been with me. I’d long wanted a Leica and with my recent experience with a Fuji X100 system, was fairly confident I wanted it to be a fixed lens system. The only reason it didn’t continue to be with me in 2026 has to do with its lack of weather sealing. For my plans in 2026 and 2027, I really need a system that’s well weather sealed. It also had a monster black and white mode that I am definitely going to miss.

Ricoh GR

My first Ricoh GR II photo that I took in Fremont, Seattle.

Not many people knew about the Ricoh GR system when it first came about. This was back when fixed lens systems weren’t really as popular as they’ve gotten since the Fuji X100. However, the Ricoh GR was and still is one of the best pocketable systems in the world. It delivers absolutely delightful pictures and is the near perfect travel camera. Again, this specific one lacked weather sealing, which they’ve since corrected and I highly recommend a GR II, III or IV to anyone considering it.

A lifetime of memories. Thank you! And onwards!
