«De jure discrimination, such as segregation laws, meant that Black and Latino people were widely barred from attending many universities, thus limiting today which students of color would benefit from legacy admissions. “Who had the opportunity to attend these institutions one or two generations back?” Park asked. “Predominantly white families.”»

"In California, everyone should be able to get ahead through merit, skill, and hard work," #Newsom said in a statement. "The California Dream shouldn't be accessible to just a lucky few, which is why we're opening the door to higher education wide enough for everyone, fairly." California's law, which takes effect Sept. 1, 2025, is nation's fifth legacy admissions ban, but only second that will apply to private colleges.

Legacy Admissions in the Spotlight: California's Push for Transparency and Equity in College Admissions

California recently passed a law that will require institutions to report on legacy admissions practices, an issue brought to light by Assemblyman Phil Ting’s efforts in 2019. The law intends to curb preferential treatment given to students with ties to alumni or donors, a practice seen as undermining the merit-based admissions process. The enforcement mechanism for this law involves publishing the names of institutions that violate it on a California Department of Justice website, serving as a form of public shaming. While some see this as a step towards transparency and accountability, others question its effectiveness, likening it to the existing practice of being named and shamed in media reports.

Nanette Asimov: #California bans legacy admissions for #Stanford other private universities

"California has become the second state to prohibit private colleges and universities from giving extra consideration to applicants who are related to alumni or donors.

AB1780, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday, bans so-called legacy admissions at private campuses that benefit from state funding, such as the Cal Grants used by thousands of students. Stanford University and the University of Southern California will be among the impacted campuses."

Massachusetts Bill is seeking to charge fees for legacy admissions. It would be a small start, but a start nonetheless.

Some may say “it runs in the family”.
Who benefits from antiquated, outmoded practices like #LegacyAdmissions? Hard to tell. Especially with a few testimonials from people whose privilege was getting admitted through selective processes which emphasized #bloodlines.
In a part of the World which emphasizes #meritocracy so heartily, this situation is in a long list of… headscratchers.
