Former Leawood, Kansas priest Richard Storey accused of stealing $160K

Richard Storey, 55, previously served as the pastor of the Curé of Ars Church in Leawood, Johnson County, Kansas, United States. On May 29, 2004, he was ordained and immediately assigned as pastor to three parishes in Osage County, Kansas.

A significant development has unfolded within the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas as Storey has surrendered to law enforcement amidst serious allegations of financial misconduct. On May 23, 2026, he turned himself in to the Leawood Police Department. He is currently facing a felony theft charge related to the alleged misappropriation of $160,000 in parish funds.

Following Storey’s surrender he was processed and placed in Johnson County custody on a $25,000 bond. While he is scheduled for a court appearance at 1:30 p.m. on May 26, 2026, officials noted that formal charges have not yet been filed. The Archdiocese has emphasized that it is cooperating fully with the Leawood Police Department and intends to respect the ongoing investigative process.

Discovery of financial irregularities

The financial investigation was triggered by a routine administrative protocol. When a change in pastoral leadership occurs, the Archdiocese conducts a standard internal financial review. While Curé of Ars had undergone an audit in 2022—part of the Archdiocese’s regular practice of reviewing parishes every three to four years—the recent transition prompted a new examination.

During this review, officials uncovered information that necessitated a referral to law enforcement. The findings were subsequently turned over to the Leawood Police Department, which maintains jurisdiction over the parish office. In response to the financial losses, the Archdiocese indicated that the parish intends to file an insurance claim to recover the funds. To prevent future issues, Chancery officials have met with current parish staff to ensure that robust financial protocols are firmly in place.

Context of previous allegations

This recent theft charge is separate from another ongoing legal matter involving Storey. In September 2025, the Archdiocese was notified by the Prairie Village Police Department of a distinct criminal investigation involving him and another adult. According to police reports, that investigation stemmed from an incident allegedly occurring between March 2022 and November 10, 2022.

Upon being notified of that investigation in September 2025, Storey chose to resign from his position as pastor of Curé of Ars. At that time, he was temporarily suspended from all public ministry, including the celebration of Mass and other pastoral duties. John Riley, the vicar general of the archdiocese, was appointed to serve as the temporary administrator of the parish.

Archdiocesan leadership has reiterated that they will not release further details until both the civil criminal proceedings and the internal canonical processes have concluded. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the Archdiocese noted that while the allegations are serious, Storey is entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty through the legal or canonical systems.

Rye – Upscale American Bistro

I finally had the chance this past summer to visit the Mission Farms location of Rye. It was a family member’s birthday. I had heard lots of buzz about the restaurant from fellow food critics and the local foodie scene. Rye has also been in the international news in the past year as pop star Taylor Swift has dined there several times, either with boyfriend Travis Kelce (who lives nearby) or with friends. Kelce is reportedly a big fan of their cinnamon rolls. This prompted a special effort by me to try their rolls during my visit.

We had hoped to dine on their large patio during our special dinner, but it was closed because of the heat. We had a table towards the back of the dining room. It wasn’t a very busy night. I recall the staff being friendly and helpful. There were no issues with our dishes.

One of the plusses of the farm-to-table American bistro format, is that a dining party with diverse tastes and dietary needs can find something fulfilling on the menu. If somebody wants meat and potatoes fare, they have options. Vegetarians? Options. Eating lighter fare? Options. And dessert!

And if the menu for one night doesn’t match your interests, check back in a few days for menu changes. The farm-to-market format is going to be responsive to seasonal food that are available.

During our birthday party night, it looks like I started with some devilled eggs and had some kind of avocado toast with chickpeas. I remember being very satisfied with my choices. The upscale toast may sound like it was too light for a main course, but I try and eat light and I had dessert plans.

I’ve written in my newsletter and elsewhere about why cinnamon rolls may be Kansas City’s signature cuisine after barbecue. I’m definitely not the first person to make that observation. Local restaurants are doing interesting things with cinnamon rolls and they’ve become a feature dessert. Part of this may have to do with Kansas City’s barbecue and steak traditions. I’ve been wanting to do a deep dive into KC’s cinnamon roll scene.

And then there is the part about Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce, Rye, and his love of cinnamon rolls. Kelce moved into Leawood in late 2023, around a mile from Rye’s location in Mission Farms. From media reports, on at least two of her visits to Kansas City, Taylor Swift had dinner at Rye with Kelce or her friends. From what I remember of the media reports, on that first visit, he introduced her to Rye and their cinnamon rolls. She visited Rye a second time with friends.

What did I think of Rye’s cinna rolls? I was impressed. The rolls were dense and flavorful. I don’t like ones that feel empty and airy like the goal is to cheat me of a solid cinnamon roll. The cinnamon wasn’t overpowering and the icing wasn’t overly sweet. Definitely a destination dessert!

Wonderfully presented, devilled eggs need to be on more restaurant menus Close-up of some fabulous devilled eggs Mom had the beet salad? Was this avocado or mushroom toast? I need to take better notes. It was delish. Moar chickpeas everywhere please! Dumplings or gnocchi? Cheeseburger and asparagus? A typical summer menu. Gotta go back and try these! Key lime is my favorite flavor for any kind of pie. Did Travis Kelce use these rolls to seduce Taylor Swift? Not the prettiest presentation, but these are maybe “S’ Tier cinnamon rolls. A very satisfied (and fed) food critic.
