Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. Some people in certain countries can be persecuted for leaving their religion, converting to another religion, being atheist or apostasy. 13 counties carry the death penalty for apostasy. Those countries are Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Mauritania, Maldives, Pakistan, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
People should be able to renounce their religion without the possibility of death. However, for the residents of these countries, that possibility is not a reality, and they are often forced to live a lie for their own protection.
