Fake grass is greener but is it worse for the environment?

From the front yards of West Miami-Dade to the waterfront mansions of Fort Lauderdale, artificial turf is appearing more and more.

Monarch butterflies’ mass die-off in 2024 caused by pesticide exposure – study
"New peer-reviewed research found an average of seven pesticides in each of 10 butterflies tested. As much as 90% of the monarch butterfly population in some US regions has been wiped out in recent decades, and evidence has pointed to pesticides, climate crisis and habitat loss as the drivers."

"... about 80% of Americans grow lawns, covering 40 million acres, or 2% of the country. Few of us think of ourselves as grass farmers, yet in the aggregate, grass is the single largest irrigated crop that Americans grow"
-It's a USAican -centred article but much can apply in principle on the other side of the Atlantic. That said, any good articles on rewilding Brit lawns? or at least de-monoculturing them in favour of wildflowers.

Going Beyond Grass: Turning Lawns Into a Pollinators’ Paradise

What was once habitat can become habitat again. Habitat that helps sustain pollinators (and therefore a host of other species) can be created — or restored — just beyond the front porch.

The state capitol has an excellent front lawn on which to gather for large demonstrations. If it's a nice sunny day, why, so much the better. But it's fine even when it rains. Forecast looks good, though.

If planning to take the train from Minneapolis, go early, or get on at the baseball stadium. Otherwise, it'll likely resemble a sardine can at intervening stations and will pass you by.

"The largest demonstration is expected to take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in St. Paul and will include a march from St. Paul College to the State Capitol. Thousands are expected to attend that event alone…"

Anti-Trump ‘No Kings Day’ protests planned across Minnesota

Organizers plan to march Saturday from St. Paul College to the State Capitol.

Was shocked the other day to discover that more grass is grown on all the #golf courses than all the #lawns . Just like everything else, we are focusing on how much your personal car can save, while rich use up more energy in a day than you can in a year. Golf is a parasitic "sport", and if it must exist it must be community owned an open to everyone. #killyourlawn #capitalism
Some homeowners are tired of overly manicured lawns—so they're embracing No Mow May all year

Like "Leave the leaves," the movement is part of a larger effort to help pollinators and encourage biodiversity in lawns.

Discover the Unique Charm of Signal Mountain Golf & Country Club | Local News

Those who know Signal Mountain Golf and Country Club, know it's often a tale of two nines. The back nine has a state park feel, which is fitting as it sits just a few hundred yards from Prentice Cooper State Park.We featured hole 16 which is a risk reward par 4. It's a dogleg right but everything feeds left towards the downward slope of the mountain.A high fade with a driver is the risky play but when needing to make up ground it can be worth it. A mid iron leaves you with something mid left to an elevated green. The NSW coast - Bird-free concrete blocks surrounded by lawns

"A track takes us into a small area of regenerating coastal rainforest, where lilly pillies are growing, and the air is filled with the sounds of birds, frogs and insects. Flannery says this is an example of coastal protection done right. The forest was saved from development after a long-running campaign by traditional owners, the Dharawal people."

"We exit the beach via stairs that lead to a manicured grass area, bike path and a row of large houses. Flannery is unimpressed. Unlike at his home, there is no bird habitat and, unsurprisingly, no birds. "This is not my thing. This is just concrete blocks surrounded by grass. To my mind, it’s as boring as batshit.”
