“Nel mondo dello spettacolo, salvando figure straordinarie come Eduardo De Filippo, esisteva quasi una specie di ius primae noctis. Io camminavo con una borsetta piena di sassi. Se qualcuno si avvicinava troppo o alzava le mani, tiravo la borsetta. Dovevo difendermi”. Marisa Laurito ricorda i propri inizi negli anni ’70, aprendosi anche su episodi particolarmente difficili vissuti, come quando poco prima, nel ’68, fece dei provini a Roma e tentarono di ‘offrirla’ a un produttore: “C’era un pullman che portava le ragazze da una produzione all’altra. A un certo punto mi fecero scendere con la scusa di un provino per un film di Vittorio De Sica. In realtà volevano portarmi ‘in regalo’ a un direttore di produzione che compiva gli anni. C’era un divano, erano convinti che avrei fatto qualsiasi cosa. Anche lì la borsetta è finita nel posto giusto”.
“Il potere maschile esiste ancora”
Oggi le cose hanno preso una piega diversa, ma ciò non vuol dire che ci siano ancora criticità da risolvere: “Il potere maschile esiste ancora” spiega nell’intervista concessa a Repubblica. “L’idea è sempre quella: io sono maschio e faccio quello che voglio. Oggi è meno evidente, ma nei ruoli dirigenziali, se su dieci uomini quattro o cinque non vedono di buon occhio una donna che comanda, vuol dire che il problema c’è, eccome”.
Una questione culturale
Attrice, produttrice e direttore artistico del teatro Trianon, Laurito continua: “Una donna che comanda gli uomini non sempre viene presa bene. Devi essere brava tre volte di più e, a volte, neanche basta […] Ancora oggi una parte degli uomini fa fatica ad accettare una donna che dirige. Lo vivono come una diminutio”. L’ostacolo più difficile da superare, secondo lei, è culturale: “Lo sguardo che ancora si ha nei confronti delle donne che comandano. Finché questa cultura non cambia – conclude -, finché non si supera il patriarcato anche nell’educazione familiare, sarà difficile risolvere davvero il problema”.

If anyone got too close or raised their hands, I would pull the bag out. I had to defend myself. Marisa Laurito recalls her beginnings in the 1970s, opening up about particularly difficult episodes she experienced, such as when, just before, in 1968, she did auditions in Rome and they tried to “offer” her to a producer: “There was a bus that brought the girls from one production to another. At some point, they made me get off with the excuse of an audition for a Vittorio De Sica film. Actually, they wanted to bring me ‘as a gift’ to a production director who was celebrating a birthday. There was a sofa, they were convinced I would do anything. Even there, the handbag ended up in the right place.”
“Male power still exists”
Today things have taken a different turn, but this doesn’t mean there are still critical issues to resolve: “Male power still exists” she explains in the interview granted to Repubblica. “The idea is always the same: I’m a man and I do what I want. Today it’s less obvious, but in managerial roles, if four or five out of ten men don’t see eye to eye with a woman in charge, that means the problem is there, believe me.”
A cultural issue
Actress, producer and artistic director of the Trianon theater, Laurito continues: “A woman who commands men is not always well received. You have to be three times as good, and sometimes, even that isn’t enough […] Today, a part of men still find it difficult to accept a woman who directs. They live it as a diminution.” The most difficult obstacle to overcome, according to her, is cultural: “The gaze that is still directed towards women who command. Until this culture changes – she concludes -, until the patriarchy is overcome even in family education, it will be difficult to truly solve the problem.”
