Yes, not surprising. If that is what has happened.

And I'm struggling to find alternative explanations.

There is the twin personality of the stereotyped English gentleman; decorum-creating and mass-killing-engaging. Which could account for the characters behaviours.
But I remember reading nothing showing tension between their actions and the author's understanding of history or morals.

I love reading of #MaryRussell and her older husband in the series but the apparent indifference of the author to mass murder, enslavement and torture is troubling.
