It's been used to invalidate my access needs, to dismiss my lived experiences. I’ve even been told that because someone else can do X, Y, Z, I should be able to, too.

I’ve been bullied, harassed, threatened, and even doxxed for advocating for access needs that look different for different people.

This article sheds light on a painful reality. When disabled people dismiss or invalidate each other's experiences, it perpetuates harm in our own community. Gatekeeping who 'counts' as disabled hurts all of us. Just because it works for someone else doesn’t mean it should be dismissed for you.

Disabled, but not like that: how we reinforce ableism in our own…

A discussion of "lateral" ableism within the disability community.

So depressing when disabled people at UC get tempted by UC to silo, to only advocate for their own disability and leave other disabled people behind, to treat the unjust system as the way things should be and individuals should just learn to negotiate "accommodations" rather than join other disabled people in fighting for our rights and for disability justice.

But hey, now you get to be the token disabled fellow who doesn't use the 'd' word or do anything to break down the system making a public university inaccessible to the public.

Anyone ever thought what it would be like to have an exclusively #blind or even an exclusively #disabled #society …? 🤔

I honestly think that, in some ways, it would be a pretty good deal, though I would fear for #LateralAbleism within it, if it were #mixed #disabilities … I mean, I know how the #wider disabled community often treats (excludes) us #blind folk.

Also, there is the whole issue of #separation from the wider society / #culture

“I picked up a particularly feisty “think yourself free of your trauma & you’ll “heal” your chronic illness like I did - people who don’t heal are choosing to be victims and disability is a bad word” troll tonight. Whoops.
Someday, I’ll learn not to poke the wasps’ nest.”
