As someone who is #neurodivergent (#ADHD, #LateDiagnosed after 40!):

It helps to remind myself that I have value because of who I am, what I know, what I’ve experienced, how I think, and even how my brain uniquely works…

NOT because I can be on time, keep a schedule, remember to do things, follow a plan, stay organized, oversimplify my complex thinking, or mask as neurotypical.

Deep sigh!

For years, authorities and others in positions of power have made it very clear that autistic people’s experiences wouldn’t be taken seriously without a diagnosis.

And now, in some quarters at least, we're the ones being blamed for overloading the system 🤷‍♀️

I was a great technical editor and decent technical writer. I didn't recognize my finding #RegEx unintuitive was a symptom. Bewildered me. #Perl programming brain smash.

I was late diagnosed with autism at the age of 33 years old. It changed my life, how I see myself, and how I see the world.

This essay I wrote for my Substack explores what happened four years later when I rewrote my autism evaluation. With the help of AI, I rewrote the cold, diagnostic language of my evaluation and infused it with empathy and understanding.

This practice was really helpful for my mental health. Please take some time to ready essay on Substack, subscribe to my newsletter for new content, like, and share. It really means so much to me.

This and making art is what I do full time now. It's everything I've ever wanted to do with my life.

If you are also autistic, late diagnosed, abd disabled, please connect with me! 💙✨️🎨

I almost cried when I discovered this book in the library yesterday and I had only just read the list of chapters. I told at least 8 of those lies to myself constantly for the last 20 years. I still believe versions of most of them. I'm still at the beginning of unlearning these. At least this provides some structure for my negative self talk.

The book is Small Talk by Richard & Roxanne Pink

From my latest essay on my Substack publication, Rivers of Reflection. Please take the time to go read it and subscribe, if you can! I so appreciate your support.

Happy Autism Awareness month. It's an important month to remind ourselves of the realities of autistic people. I am autistic. I am Level 1 diagnosed at age 33. I speak up during Autism Awareness Month so that my Level 2 and Level 3 autistic siblings have a voice where they may have a quieter one.

Thank you for your support! Please consider becoming a subscriber to continue supporting my work.

First image reads: "You must imagine for yourself what it is to carry that dissonance quietly, everywhere you go. To live in a body that is constantly negotiating with its environment. To move through systems that were not designed with you in mind. To wonder, again and again, if you are the problem or if the world has simply never learned how to hold you."

Diary of a late-realized autistic, part 2:

Just had a sudden epiphany about why I hate "mobile-first" web design that doesn't detect browser size and adjust for it ... when I'm on my desktop with my 5120x1440 resolution, those sites are LITERALLY SHOUTING AT ME WITH GIANT BUTTONS AND HUGE TEXT AND PICTURES THAT TAKE UP HALF THE SCREEN! I get anxious just trying to find the information I came here for ...

Diary of a late-in-life realized autistic:

At 58 years old, I'm just now figuring out just how loud the world is as I start wearing earplugs whenever I'm out in public. Even if there isn't a crowd, just being able to reduce the volume of ambient noise, music played in the restaurant/bar, nearby conversations... it's life changing. Right up there with being trans, I wish I'd figured this out decades ago!

For the record, I can't recommend enough Loop brand earplugs! Super comfortable, lots of options, and being in-ear, I can wear cute earrings and not have them covered up like headphones would do! 😉
